ACPE Executive Director Peter H. Vlasses to Deliver 2019 Commencement Address

Published on 07 May 2019

Peter H. Vlasses, Pharm.D., Hon. D.Sc., FCCP, executive director of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), will address graduates at this year’s Commencement, which will be held Saturday, May 11, at the Stifel Theatre in downtown St. Louis.

Vlasses has served as the executive director of ACPE for 20 years and has been a leader in the pharmacy profession for more than four decades. His many accomplishments during his tenure at ACPE have included overseeing the accreditation of the professional degree program in pharmacy and helping to establish the ACPE International Services Program. On June 30, Vlasses will officially retire from his position as executive director of ACPE, marking two decades of service to the organization.

Vlasses previously served as the speaker for the College’s White Coat Ceremony in August 2015 when the 2019 graduates were transitioning into the professional program. His return to the College to deliver the Commencement address marks the first time that a White Coat speaker has returned four years later to serve as the Commencement speaker.

Prior to joining ACPE, Vlasses served as a clinical faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. His professional experience also includes service as head of the clinical research unit in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and time as a research associate professor of medicine and pharmacology at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Vlasses also served as the associate director of the Clinical Practice Advancement Center, and was director of clinical research and investigator services at University HealthSystem Consortium in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Vlasses is a founding member, fellow and past-president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and has been a member of the American Pharmacists Association and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists for many years. He also served on the board of directors of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors and currently serves on the clinical advisory council of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.

“Dr. Peter Vlasses has dedicated his 45-year career to advancing and improving pharmacy education, research and practice,” said John A. Pieper, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAPhA, president of St. Louis College of Pharmacy. “Faculty, graduates and students have much to learn from him, and we are delighted that he will speak to us at our 151st Commencement.”

This year’s Commencement will feature 419 candidates for graduation from 22 states and 14 countries. The list includes 253 students who will receive a Doctor of Pharmacy, 100 students who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and 66 students who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Health Humanities.
