STLCOP Hosts Reception at ASHP Midyear Meeting

Published on 13 February 2018

Faculty, students and alumni of St. Louis College of Pharmacy attended the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Held Dec. 3-7, 2017, the event, which is considered the largest annual gathering of pharmacists worldwide, attracted more than 20,000 pharmacy professionals.

During the event, more than 160 students, alumni, faculty and friends of the College enjoyed networking opportunities as part of a special reception hosted by the Alumni Association at Tommy Bahama.

ASHP Midyear also featured a residency showcase that gave students the opportunity to learn first-hand about residency opportunities throughout the country.

“Not only is ASHP Midyear a great opportunity for professional development through continuing pharmacy education programming, but it is also a great opportunity for students to network with current pharmacy residents and residency program directors,” said Jack Burke, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, professor and associate dean for postgraduate education.

Burke noted that participation in residency programs, allows students to build upon the knowledge gained through coursework and learn more about specializations that fit within their specific interests.

“Pharmacy residencies are organized, directed postgraduate training experiences that help pharmacists develop the abilities to provide direct patient care and better manage the medication use process,” said Burke. “Postgraduate year one residency programs provide general experience, whereas postgraduate year two residencies prepare individuals for more advanced practice in one of more than 20 specialty areas, such as ambulatory care, internal medicine, infectious diseases or critical care.”
