St. Louis College of Pharmacy has been named to the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This year marks the third consecutive year the College has been recognized for its commitment to promoting health initiatives throughout the region.
“Community engagement is an integral part of the College’s mission,” said President John A. Pieper, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAPhA. “Giving back is vital in preparing our students to become leaders, not only in the profession of pharmacy but also in the community.”
Students, staff and faculty have demonstrated their dedication to others by volunteering countless hours. Through free community health screenings, the STLCOP C.A.R.E.S. (Community Awareness Reaching Everyone in St. Louis) service activities, and the medication disposal initiative, the College has made a positive impact across the region.
The annual STLCOP C.A.R.E.S. service activities, part of the College’s Founders Day celebration, brings students, staff and faculty together for a day of volunteering across the region.
“Participants in STLCOP C.A.R.E.S. volunteered 822 hours at more than 20 sites around the St. Louis area,” said Macy Russell, institutional events manager. “We hope this event continues to grow in future years as we work to advance our efforts to provide valuable service to the community.”
Through its medication disposal initiatives, the College has collected more than 27,470 pounds of unused and unwanted medication from community members throughout the St. Louis area. The College’s collection efforts are in response to the steady rise of drug overdoses, in hopes of preventing prescription and over-the-counter medications from falling into the wrong hands.
“Our partnership with the city of St. Louis and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on the medication disposal initiative is the first of its kind in the country,” said Pieper. “It is gratifying to see all of our efforts to engage with and serve the St. Louis community be recognized.”
