College Goes Crazy for Cake Contest

Published on 20 December 2013

Have you seen the video of a piece of cake falling five stories into a waiting mouth? How about the one where a student-pharmacist dunks a basketball?

Since finals ended, St. Louis College of Pharmacy has had one thing on its mind: cake, specifically a four-foot-tall fiberglass cake. These large decorations are being handed out by stl250, the nonprofit organization in charge of celebrating St. Louis’ 250th birthday in 2014. As part of the celebration, 250 of these giant cakes will be spread across 15 counties in the St. Louis region. The location of 50 of the cakes will be determined by popular vote.

The College has launched an all-out effort to try and bring one of the cakes to campus. One of the videos includes students dropping cake off the top of the parking garage. Another showed off a student-athlete’s basketball skills while wearing his white coat. More than 20 faculty and staff, including College President John A. Pieper, Pharm.D., passed a cake around campus to get everyone in the spirit. More videos will be posted until voting ends Jan. 3.

“These videos have been fun to create,” says Brad Brown, director of public relations at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. “The entire campus has embraced the project. It provides us with an opportunity to show another side of St. Louis College of Pharmacy to those in the community who may not be very familiar with us.”

St. Louis College of Pharmacy has many reasons to celebrate in 2014, including the beginning of construction on a new academic and research building and the introduction of an expanded curriculum.

“And 2014 will also mark 150 years of St. Louis College of Pharmacy educating future pharmacy innovators,” Brown says. “The education and research done at the College has benefited the health care of our entire region. What better way to celebrate together with St. Louis than with a giant cake.”
