Support Community Initiatives
For 150 years, St. Louis College of Pharmacy has maintained a steadfast presence in the St. Louis region.
Through education initiatives, volunteer service and workforce development programs, the College is committed to creating healthier communities throughout the region.
BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute
Established in 2008, the BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute, a collaboration between Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Express Scripts, and St. Louis College of Pharmacy, is a workforce development program targeting underrepresented, multicultural populations.
The six-week summer experience offers 70 students across four levels of learning:
- STE(A)M-focused academic preparation with opportunities for college credit
- ACT preparation
- A scholarship identification workshop
- Field trips
With its innovative educational model, the BESt program is focused on three objectives:
- Provide a pipeline of pharmacists equipped to serve the growing regional population.
- Increase diversity within pharmacy and other health professions.
- Develop engaged leaders for the St. Louis community.
In summer 2018, for the first time, each BESt III participant was offered a contingent letter of acceptance to St. Louis College of Pharmacy and $5,000 or more in tuition scholarships. In total, the 21 participants received more than $200,000 in institutional scholarships.
BESt is truly a one-of-a-kind program uniting three of the region's most successful health care organizations – all with a common goal of developing talented individuals to ensure they are prepared to meet the needs of our ever-changing communities and world.
In 2018, BESt was recognized for its impact in the St. Louis area and commitment to promoting diversity, access and opportunity for all when it was selected as a "What's Right With the Region" honoree in the “Improving Racial Equality and Social Justice” category.
