Alumnae Found Women's Giving Initiative to Make an Impact

Published on 13 November 2015

In 2014, a group of alumnae and friends of the College interested in making a difference at St. Louis College of Pharmacy created the Women’s Giving Initiative (WGI). Together, founding members Margaret (Anderson) Besing ’86, Amy Gill ’01, Cathy Goetz ’85, Marilyn Haberle, Elaine Haynes ’86, Janelle (Verrant) Sheen ’98/’99, Jane Tracy ’85, and Janene Verrant '98/'99 held events inside their homes to launch the WGI’s mission of enhancing students’ personal and professional skills through collective giving.

“I joined the WGI because it is an organization that directly benefits students. It’s my way to take the success of my career and make an impact on students at the College to help them become successful too,” says Janelle Sheen ’98/’99.

The WGI is a philanthropic organization that funds programs relating to career development, individual support for students with children, self-defense programs, international learning opportunities, professional pharmacy meetings, and other student-focused programs.

Through the determination and dedication of the founding members, the WGI has raised nearly $20,000 during its inaugural year. The founding members look forward to assisting student programs in the upcoming year.

“This year, our group is focusing on recruiting new members. We want to raise awareness about the huge impact the WGI will have on the College’s student population,” says Sheen. “The College is changing the profession of pharmacy in St. Louis. Now, is the time for us to help support pharmacy students in the community and in their professional endeavors.”

In addition to philanthropy, the WGI provides members with the opportunity to network and stay in touch with friends, fellow alumnae, pharmacy professionals, and staff at the College. Members are also invited to participate in events with WGI’s partner organization, Women in Pharmacy.

To continue the WGI mission, raise awareness, and recruit members, a Kickoff Reception will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 5 – 7 p.m. at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. This reception will be the first event of its kind in the College's history.
