The Eutectic softball team played its final four games of the inaugural season over the weekend of April 20-21. On Saturday, April 20, the Eutectics traveled to Springfield, Ill., to take on Benedictine University-Springfield for a doubleheader. With first-year pitcher Danielle Kirgan on the mound in the first game, the Euts matched up with the Bulldogs, racking up 13 hits each. But, despite three hits each from first-year players Alyssa Farbak and Jaime Everett (including a double from each), the Euts left nine on base, losing 11-4 to the Bulldogs.
The second game on Saturday began with Benedictine putting five runs on the board in the first three innings while the Euts remained scoreless. Then, in the top of the fourth, STLCOP scored four runs to make up some ground on the Bulldogs. Unfortunately, there would be no more scoring from either team for the rest of the game and the Euts ended up with a 5-4 loss. The Euts had nine hits to the Bulldogs' 10, but made five errors versus Benedictine's one. First-year player Jade Pfleger had a double for the Euts, while Kelsey Toler, Heather Cohen, Kierstyn Fornoff and Kirgan collected RBIs. Farbak took the loss on the mound.
Sunday, the Bulldogs returned the trip to St. Louis to play another doubleheader on the Eutectics' home field at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. With Everett on the mound this time, neither team would score until Benedictine put a run on the scoreboard in the fourth. Then, in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs went on a roll, scoring six runs before the Euts could make the third out and get to the dugout. Down 7-0, The Euts would try to respond in the bottom of the sixth, but could only manage to get one player home. With only three hits the entire game (from Farbak, Everett, and Toler), the Euts could not dig themselves out of the hole, losing 7-1 to the Bulldogs.
The Eutectics were the first ones to score in the second game on Sunday, with Toler collecting an RBI in the first inning and the Euts getting up 1-0 over the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs quickly responded with a run of their own in the second, two more in the third, and another in the fifth to pull ahead 5-1. A double from Pfleger and another RBI from Toler would secure another run for the Euts in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the Eutectics could muster, finishing with a 5-2 loss going to the Eutectics' Farbak on the mound.
The Euts were scheduled to play another doubleheader on Wed., April 24, versus MacMurray College, but the game was cancelled due to weather-related issues. Wet weather wreaked havoc on the Eutectics' schedule this spring and shortened an already abbreviated first-ever season. With some rescheduling, the Euts did manage to get in six of their eight scheduled games, finishing the season 0-6. Everett led the STLCOP bats this season, finishing with an impressive .500 batting average, including seven hits and three RBIs in her five games. Toler collected five
hits and three RBIs over the six games, while Cohen finished with a .400 batting average.

2013 STLCOP Softball Team |
After two game cancellations due to bad weather and field conditions, the Eutectic softball team was finally able to get its first games of the season, and of STLCOP history, on the books. On Thurs., April 11, field conditions at Principia College were acceptable, but the weather was anything but pleasant. Gray skies, winds, and temperatures in the 40s made the doubleheader a bitterly cold experience for players and spectators alike. The Euts endured the cold, along with two losses to Principia, 11-0 and 14-1.
With one hit in the first two innings of the first game, from first-year left fielder Jaime Everett, the Euts were down 4-0 going into the third. In the bottom of the third, Principia scored seven runs on three Eutectic errors, three hits, a walk, and a batter hit by a pitch to make the score 11-0 before the inning closed. No more points were scored by either team, despite two more hits by first-year right fielder Mallory Mensing and first-year shortstop Jade Pfleger. The 10-run-rule put an end to the game at the bottom of the fifth.
Principia continued its dominance in the second game, scoring 10 runs in the first inning and four more in the second and third. Second-year first-baseman Kelsey Toler had a hit in the second, but the Euts did not get on the board until the fourth inning, when Everett singled to left, stole second base, and scored on a single to right by fourth-year third baseman Kelsey Mileur. Principia would not score again, but neither would the Eutectics, who ended up losing 14-1.
After two games, the Eutectics hope to collect their first win at the next game on Saturday, April 20, when they host Benedictine University of Springfield at noon.
STLCOP Athletic Department Adds Softball Team to Intercollegiate Program
This spring, STLCOP welcomes the addition of a women’s softball team to its varsity sports program. In response to a growing demand from students, athletic director Jill Harter researched the idea of sponsoring a team and found it feasible. This year, the team will play a limited schedule of six to eight dates in the St. Louis area. Assistant volleyball coach and athletic department assistant Katie Payne will coach the 15 student athletes on the roster with help from Harter as an assistant coach. Payne and Harter both played collegiate softball at Dominican University and Saint Louis University, respectively.
Payne is excited to coach the rookie team, but also recognizes the challenges the team will face. Since it was only recently approved, recruiting was non-existent and STLCOP may struggle from a lack of pitchers. In addition, the team's record may suffer. Nevertheless, enthusiasm is high from players and coaches alike, and the inaugural season looks to be one of excitement and good competition. The softball season kicks off on Mar. 20 with a game against MacMurray College on the STLCOP home field at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park.
