With only eight athletes, the Eutectic women’s track and field team tied with conference rival Brescia University for second place at the KIAC Championships in Berea, Ky., on April 26. The small, but mighty, STLCOP team scored 90 points and brought home eight all-conference medals.
The Euts were led by second-year thrower Rebecca Larson, who scored 20 points in the throwing events. She finished second in the hammer throw with yet another record-breaking performance of 29.87m. She also took second in the discus throw (27.49m) and fifth in the shot put (8.38m).
Fourth-year hurdler Suong Nguyen did her part by improving on her school record in the final 100m hurdles race of her career and finishing second at 17.52. In addition, Nguyen ran her first-ever 400m hurdles race, setting the school record at 1:22.38 and earning another all-conference medal for third place.
Second-year Sarah Pollmann and first-year Janki Patel took two of the three all-conference medals in the 1500m run, finishing in second and third places at 5:11.40 and 5:25.83, respectively. Pollmann later broke her own STLCOP record in the 800m by nearly three seconds, with a third-place finish at 2:30.06.
Third-year Bethany Chew also earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the javelin at 31.97m. First-year Emily Weichman became the first STLCOP women’s track and field athlete to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase, setting a record of 15:54.53 and finishing in fourth place.
