Five Athletes are NAIA Scholar-Athletes
Five STLCOP spring sport athletes have been named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. To be eligible for the award, varsity student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA as a third-year or above.
Head coach Caleb Barnes leads the Eutectic women’s tennis team. Preseason training for the team begins two weeks before classes start in August with the KIAC Tournament in late October. The team has approximately eight to ten matches per season, with the majority of travel on weekends.

Members of the Eutectic men’s and women’s tennis teams competed as individuals in the STLCOP Invitational Tournament held at Tower Grove Park from Sept. 5-6. Despite several rain delays, the four-team tournament, run by STLCOP coaches Caleb and Kateryna Barnes, finished in two days.
In the men’s division, players from Brescia University and Principia College along with St. Louis College of Pharmacy competed in two singles and two doubles draws. In his first collegiate match, first-year Sheldon Taylor impressed the Eutectic coaches by defeating Principia’s Andrew Kratz (6-3, 6-4) to make it to the round of eight, before succumbing to Brescia’s Joshua Ackermann (6-4, 6-1) in the men’s B singles bracket. “We are really excited about Sheldon’s future with the team,” Barnes said. “He’s already greatly improved and we can’t wait to see where his potential will take him in the next four years.”
Brescia, Principia, and STLCOP were joined by members of the Webster University team to create three singles and two doubles draws for the 31 women competing. STLCOP’s third-year Anna Karaciewicz won her first three matches in the C bracket, defeating Chelsea Foster from Webster (6-7(7), 6-2, 10-6), Gracie Buchanan from Principia (6-1, 6-2) and Rachael Schueler from Principia (7-5, 6-0) to get into the finals. Eutectic third-year Masha Kurenok had a first-round bye, and then defeated Olivia Kasprzyk (4-6, 6-1, 12-10) and Fiona Ouma (6-4, 6-3), both from Principia, to face teammate Karaciewicz in the finals. Due to weather delays, the all-Eutectic final match would not be played out. In doubles, Karaciewicz and Kurenok would team up to beat Buchanan and Kasprzyk again in the B draw, but lost in the second round semi-finals to Emily Hellinger and Tarsila Duck of Brescia. The fourth-year Eutectic duo of Carmen Stach and LeAnn Tran made it to the semi-finals of the B draw as well, defeating Schueler and Ouma (8-4), before taking a loss to a team from Webster.
While this is the off-season for tennis, the Euts are hosting two matches this fall in addition to the tournament. Both teams will next host competitions at Tower Grove Park on Saturday, Sept. 13, at noon. The men’s team will play the Concordia Seminary Preachers and the women will compete against the Blackburn College Beavers.
