Patton has been president of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy since 1994, where he has overseen its last construction program, the conclusion of 2 successful capital campaigns, re-accreditation (twice), five-fold growth in endowment, institution of two new strategic plans and implementation of the all-professional doctoral curriculum. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning the B.S. in Pharmacy, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics. After completion of the doctorate, he joined the faculty of the University of Kansas rising from Assistant Professor in 1975 to full professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacy Practice in 1984. For 3 1/2 years, he also served The University of Kansas as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, Graduate Studies and Public Service. He has also served as a visiting Professor at The Victorian College of Pharmacy in Melbourne, Australia, and was a special invited lecturer of The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology of Japan.
He left the University of Kansas in 1986 to pursue a career in the pharmaceurical industry. Dr. Patton held increasingly responsible positions at The Upjohn Company, Oread Laboratories, Merck and Co., Inc., and The DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company, where in his last position he was Vice President of Pharmaceutical R&D. Dr. Patton has been active in numerous professional and scientific organizations, and has served as an officer in the American Pharmaceutical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was president of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. The University of Wisconsin-Madison awarded him a university citation for his accomplishments in research and academia and his contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr. Patton serves as a scientific consultant to the pharmaceutical industry, is a member of the United States Pharmacopeal Convention, served on the Council of Presidents of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity Foundation Board of Directors. He was a member of the Board of Directors of D&K Healthcare Resources from 1997 to 2005, and from 1995 to 2000 he served on the Board of Directors of Jones Pharma, both public companies based in St. Louis. Currently he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing.
