STLCOP-SLPS Summer Academy
June 3 - 7, 2013
Established in 2012, the STLCOP-SLPS Summer Academy is a one-week pharmacy enrichment program for seventh and eighth grade middle school students offered by the St. Louis Public School District and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The program will expose students enrolled in Compton Drew Investigational Learning Center Middle School and McKinley Classical Junior Academy Middle School to pharmacy education experiences using basic math and science skills. Students will receive fun hands-on experiential learning from STLCOP’s energetic faculty and students, who will chaperone field trips to the Missouri Botanical Garden and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Also, STLCOP faculty and students will facilitate lectures and discussions on health literacy, introductory pharmacy concepts, and career paths in pharmacy. With the program conducted on the STLCOP campus, students will have a unique opportunity to explore pharmacy first-hand in the classroom. The program will foster relationship building, mentoring, and professionalism between STLCOP’s faculty and staff and participating SLPS students.

BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute
June 10 – July 19, 2013
The BESt Pharmacy Summer Institute is a six-week summer program offered by Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Express Scripts, and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The mission of the program is to expose and prepare multicultural students for a future career in healthcare, with an emphasis in pharmacy. The mission is executed with a model that combines academics, exposure, and professional development. Academics focus on improving mathematics, science, language arts, and ACT/SAT skills. Students get exposure to the pharmacy profession through pharmacy lectures and site visits. Professional development emphasizes personal brand, character, and leadership development.
The program is open to under-represented minority high school students with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average attending a St. Louis/East St. Louis City or County public school. The majority of the program will be conducted on the St. Louis College of Pharmacy campus during which students will be engaged in courses for ACT/SAT preparation, college composition, math, science, and an introduction to pharmacy concepts. The curriculum is developed and taught by local high school and college level professors. Pharmacy students at St. Louis College of Pharmacy will serve as mentors and tutors to facilitate the students’ transition, help them to feel welcomed, and guide their development in building team-skills and working on class projects. In addition to classroom learning, students will have the opportunity to visit other pharmacy practice settings: Barnes-Jewish Hospital (hospital pharmacy) and Express Scripts (managed care pharmacy). These field trips provide unique experiences for students to explore other pharmacy career paths while interacting with the pharmacists employed at the sites.
The ultimate goals of BESt are to ensure there are pharmacists able to serve the growing population, increase diversity within the pharmacy profession, and develop future leaders for the Saint Louis community.
